As humans, it’s easy to take things for granted. The fact that we live is such a beautiful world is truly incredible: We are blessed beyond measure to live our lives surrounded by such unique beauty. One of the things I believe we often take for granted, is the intensity of the colors around us. We don’t always take the time to stop and appreciate the beauty of the world, or even revel in the stunning simplicity of each color. Today, we’re going to pause and take a moment to relish the unique world in which we live, starting, of course, with the color blue. We’ll answer the question: “Why is the sky blue?” to fully delve into the details and learn more about the world in which we live.
Why is the Sky Blue? Science and Nature
There is a scientific explanation for why the sky is blue. You may not remember it from school, so here’s a brief explanation: Light may look white to our eyes, but it is composed of all the colors of the rainbow. When light travels, it travels in waves. Each light wave would travel in a straight line, but when it is disrupted, it changes, and each one operates differently. For example, some light travels in choppy, short waves, while others travel in long, smooth waves. These light waves can be reflected (as in a mirror), scattered (as in molecules of gases), or bent (like a prism). When sunlight travels to earth, and hits the atmosphere, it is scattered by all the particles and gas in the air. Because blue light waves travel in shorter, choppier waves, it is scattered more than the other colored light waves. This is why the sky appears blue to our eyes.
Limitless Blue: Endless Possibilities
The science behind the color of the sky is fascinating. And, while we can know exactly how the sky is blue, the reason why it is blue remains unknown. What if we had a green sky? Or, a purple sky? This boggles our mind, but it is an interesting thought to consider. We are fortunate to have a blue sky, because blue is calming, peaceful, and loved by most people in the world. Also, blue denotes responsibility and reliability. We are blessed to have such a stunning, brilliant, peaceful color for the canopy above our heads. Our world is a wonderful place!
